19 June 2008 LANDKOM INTERNATIONAL PLC 9,000 tonnes of OSR at $540 per tonne and 20,000 tonnes of wheat at $215 per tonne pre-sold Landkom International PLC (AIM: LKI, “Landkom” or the “Company”), the Ukrainian producer of high-value oil seed rape (OSR) and wheat, has agreed off-take agreements, pre-sales, of the first 9,000 tonnes of its OSR crop and the first 20,000 tonnes of its wheat crop for this year. The 9,000 tonnes of OSR have been sold at a net price of $540 per tonne to one of the world’s largest commodities suppliers. Harvesting of the OSR crop is planned to start in July 2008. Read More

Ukraine: Sown Area for 2007/08 Winter Wheat Likely to Increase by 15 Percent

As of October 16, farmers in Ukraine had planted 6.63 million hectares of winter grains for 2007/08, against 5.2 million by the same date last year and approximately 7.2 million in 2003 and 2004. The figure includes 5.6 million hectares of wheat, 0.36 million rye, and 0.44 million barley. The fall sowing campaign is nearly complete; agricultural officials forecast total 2007/08 winter grain area at 7.06 million hectares, compared to final sown area of 6.06 million for 2006/07. |

Wheat prices have reached record highs recently experiencing, an 11 year high in August 2007. World wheat stocks are currently at a 50 year low with only around 30 days current supply. These stocks, even with good harvests, will take several years to rebuild and so all these factors are expected to combine to maintain a firm market for grain prices in the medium term.
The price of wheat has increased mainly as a result of crop losses during 2006 and 2007 after extreme weather conditions damaged cereal crops in Europe and Australia. Heavy rain during harvest has reduced yields in France and Germany, whereas high temperatures and persistent drought has reduced yields in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. In addition, in North America there is an ongoing switch from growing food crops in favour of feedstock such as maize, corn and soybean for the expanding biofuels industry… |
